Two Column Proofs in High School Geometry : Interactive "doodle notes" -

When students color or doodle in math class, it activates both hemispheres of the brain at the same time. There are proven benefits of this cross-lateral brain activity:

- new learning

- relaxation (less math anxiety)

- visual connections

- better memory & retention of the content!

Students fill in the sheets, answer the questions, and color, doodle or embellish. Then, they can use it as a study guide later on.

Content includes:

- big idea: going from the given to the goal

- how to justify steps

- converting statements into equations that can be manipulated

- working with diagrams

- step by step for writing a proof

- what to do when you get stuck - options

- how to create new lines in the proof

- combining previous lines using substitution and the transitive property

- being careful about congruent vs. equal!!

- practice and examples

Reviews from other teachers:

-Used as a study guide for my daughter in Geometry! She is filling in the notes as a way to review the topics taught throughout the year!

-I am using this to review for our state test in my geometry class. It's such a great way to organize the ideas that go with proofs - something that my students truly struggle with!

Have used these the past two years. Love the step by step and the doodle I think helps the kids really follow the idea of a two column proof.

-I have used Math Giraffe's Doodle Notes for many years now with students who have dyscalculia and EL students. I used the entire Geometry curriculum with a student who spoke very little English, and my Spanish is minimal. Between the images on the pages and pointing to real objects in the room, he understood perfectly. I have used Doodle Notes during distance learning by either emailing the file to be printed by the parent, by screen sharing in Zoom, and by using them on a Google Slide. The author is happy to help if you have any questions.

-I used this along with the unit on proof-writing and with the information on your blog. My son has been seriously struggling with writing proofs since we began geometry. I have gone over each and every lesson in the book with him. I have gone over the lessons in SEVERAL textbooks on writing proofs. This seems to finally have broken through for him. Thank you.
