Derivatives & Second Derivatives - Graphing Concepts:

This activity requires students to match up the graph of a function with the graphs of its 1st and 2nd derivative. This will help students to visually compare graphs and see how slopes at different points transfer to the graph of the derivative.

The activity does not require differentiation, just the understanding of what a derivative means in terms of the graph.

Students cut out 10 squares with the f'(x) and f''(x) graphs mixed up. They decide where each belongs on the activity sheet containing the original f(x) functions.

Reviews from other teachers:

Loved this activity for my students! It reinforced needed skills.

- Great activity to help link concept to the graphical representation.

Challenging + Engaging = Awesome resource! It's not easy to find quality Calculus resources, so I appreciate you taking the time to make some. Thank you :)

- Awesome way to help students to solidify their knowledge

I had students work in pairs on this and they were discussing and "arguing" why they thought an answer was correct. It gave them an opportunity to really make sure they understood this concept.

- Useful in a college classroom too!

Can even cut out f(x)'s and match them with the others to make the activity more difficult. The sort as is can become notes if students provide reasons for their choices.

- Good activity at a fair price.

- A+ brilliant product

- Bought this for a grad school project. Worked great! Thanks for making such a great resource.

- This is one of the hardest topics for my students to grasp, so I'm glad I found a product to help!

So nice when you can have a fun practical activity for the higher order thinkers! Excited to use this without having to draw all my own graphs

- Good resource for students to practice derivative graphs!

- Easy to use. Good resource.

This was a great activity to help the students visualize how the graphs are related to each other. And even my grade 12 students enjoy an opportunity to do a cut-and-paste activity!

- This was just what I was looking for!! I can't wait to use it in the classroom.

- This is such a GREAT formative assessment tool!!!!
