Systems of Equations, their Solutions, and Solving a System by Graphing and / or Substitution: 3 page visual interactive "doodle notes" set -

When students color or doodle in math class, it activates both hemispheres of the brain at the same time. There are proven benefits of this cross-lateral brain activity:

- new learning

- relaxation (less math anxiety)

- visual connections

- better memory & retention of the content!

Students fill in the sheets, answer the questions, and color, doodle or embellish. Then, they can use it as a study guide later on. Graphic doodle and sketch notes take full advantage of Dual Coding Theory (the way brains process visual and linguistic information) to maximize retention.

Content includes:

- concept of a system of linear equations

- understanding and representing solutions

- solving by graphing a system

- writing a system for a word problem

- solving by substitution

- special systems of equations

- types of solutions (one, no solution, infinitely many)

- graphical and algebraic representation of each type

- practice & examples

Check out the preview images for more detail about this item and the research behind it.

Visual note taking strategies like sketch notes or doodle notes are based on dual coding theory.  When we can blend the text input with graphic/visual input, the student brain processes the information differently and can more easily convert the new learning into long-term memory.

This strategy also integrates the left and right hemispheres of the brain to increase focus, learning, and retention!

3 pages are included, plus answer keys, samples, and info.

Reviews from other teachers:

-My students love doing these while I have a substitute teacher! We then go through it the next day together:)

-The students love the interactive notes, the coloring eases the stress that some of them have with math.

-I love these doodle notes! I threw it up on a projector and the kids followed along. This works great for an interactive notebook!

-My students have been hybrid for a long time and now we are back to mostly in person. They needed a change in the routine and this allows to keep their focus during a lesson when the school year is almost ending. This is great for students who need to doodle while they listen.

-My students love the doodle notes. It slows down the pace for them. IMHO, teaching "systems" is the most difficult Alg. 1 lesson. This helps a lot.

-Love doodle notes. Use with students I tutor as a "homework" or "review". Accidentally learning is the best.
